Project Summary

NORTON AUDUBON HOSPITAL
EXPANSION and RENOVATION
LOUISVILLE, KY

GEM is providing subsurface exploration, construction quality control testing/monitoring, and Special Inspections services for the $107 million expansion and major renovation of the Norton Audubon Hospital on Poplar Lever Road in Louisville, KY. Highlights of the project include:
  • two-story addition to house 74 new private patient beds
  • two-story parking garage
  • remodeled existing patient rooms and major upgrades and expansion of the Emergency Department, Intensive Care Unit and Open Heart Unit, addition of three operating rooms, renovation of the main OR as well as an expanded recovery area
  • new front entrance with improved patient registration areas and featured amenities like a retail pharmacy, cafĂ© and gift shop
  • new pavements and helipad

Early Stage of Construction
Work began in the spring of 2016 and will take approximately three and a half years to complete. Norton Healthcare selected Laughlin Millea Hillman as the architect, Cornerstone Engineering as the structural engineer, and Messer Construction for the construction management firm.  Specific elements tested and inspected by GEM included:
  • drilled pier, micropile, and shallow foundations including: pile load testing; bearing material evaluation; steel reinforcement; concrete and grout properties including compressive strength
  • reinforcement and concrete for cast-in-place foundation walls, grade beams, and columns
  • slab-on-grade and structural floor slabs, including floor flatness/levelness
  • structural steel framing, light gauge framing and light weight concrete on metal deck
  • fire stops, spray-applied fireproofing, and fire-treated material for blocking and sheathing
  • roadway/parking/slab-on-grade subgrades and embankments including fill placement
  • hot mix asphalt
